The #2 single in Australia as the clock turned from 1989 to 1990: “We Didn’t Start The Fire” by Billy Joel. I had no idea this song was a hit so late in the 1980s. I wonder whether Billy was influenced by REM’s ‘Its The End Of The World As We Know It?’

Why ‘90 Percent Hits’? Well, the 1990s saw the duel of the long running Australian pop compilation series 100% Hits (1991-) and Hit Machine (1993-1999). Above are photos of Tim’s 1993-era 100% Hits Volume 11, which featured the likes of ‘What’s My Name’ by Snoop Doggy Dogg and ‘Asshole’ by Denis Leary. Back in the days when people bought music on tapes.

Also, as 90s kids, we learned that we needed a name that’s witty at first, but that seems less funny every time you hear it.

I now have, on CD, 100% Hits volumes 1-27 (I got most of them on ebay or the Brisbane Lifeline Bookfest for, you know, about $3 each).

Also, yes. There’s a podcast that I am if you want to hear my voice.

You’d think, after 10 years of the iTunes store, etc, that detailed credits and liner notes would be normal, that someone would have got around to ensuring that this stuff was necessary as metadata by now. That goes for you too, Spotify. I mean, even where I’ve reviewed things and gotten webstreams and digital downloads where I’m essentially trying to inform people about an album, they often don’t have that information unless whoever wrote the press release bothered to write that down (might this be why none of the reviewers say anything but “female vocals”?).

(Allmusic is great for credits, but it bugs me that their detail goes down to only the album level rather than the song level. Sure, it’s good to know that Elton John plays piano on the album Under The Red Sky by Bob Dylan, but then Dylan himself plays piano on the album, as does Bruce Hornsby. What songs does Elton actually play on? Allmusic, I’d like to be able to find that out too.)
